Exciting new Asian street food stall is coming to Darlington Market

A MARRIED couple spice things up by opening a pan-Asian food business in Darlington Market.

The imminent arrival of Bao Wow, which is expected to open in a few weeks, will be the next addition to the market operated by Market Asset Management (MAM).

The company will serve “exciting, different and healthy dishes” including specialty bao, a Taiwanese steamed bun stuffed with a choice of braised pork belly, Korean fried chicken or smoked tofu.

Other dishes will include Salmon Poke, a Hawaiian dish with Japanese roots that includes a variety of vegetables, nuts and seeds served over a bed of seasoned short-grain rice. The jewel of the dish is the seasoned raw fish.

Customers can also order a Rendang, a Malaysian and Indonesian specialty featuring melt-in-the-mouth beef cooked for a minimum of 12 hours and served with steamed jasmine rice and a variety of vegetables and pickles.

Today Alicia Horsley, who will run the business with her husband Jonathan, said the couple decided to take the plunge after their delicious food won praise from customers during lockdown when they launched a service of home delivery.

Alicia is from Malaysia and met her English husband while studying at the University of Birmingham.

She said: “We have always been happiest when we spend a lot of time together. We hope that the stand will allow us to grow together and give us the opportunity to share our passion for the varied food cultures of the places we have also been.

“We have been married for 22 years, so we really work together. I love Darlington Markets, it reminds me of the busy food courts all over Asia.

“All the traders and Market Asset Management have been so welcoming and supportive, and we can’t wait to open.”

Bao Wow will occupy the space left by the former What’s Your Beef burger company.

Hayden Ferriby, Chief Commercial Officer at MAM, said, “We look forward to welcoming Bao Wow very soon. It’s an exciting business whose delicious and unique food will appeal to our customers who are spoiled for choice when it comes to fantastic food from our independent street vendors.
